Finally ready to open. It was a long way to get here. Actually it has been a journey for many years. First running Eksempel as a wholesale brand for 10 years. Then a break from Eksempel for several years. But I could not get it out of my mind. Eksempel is such a big part of me.
The foundations of the aesthetics can be tracked back to my final project at KADK (Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation).
My final project was about redefining femininity, researching how to express my view on femininity, redefining technical details and turning them into a part of the design. The kick-off inspiration was a holiday photo from a friend. She had tried to capture the beautiful trees as she went by, driving in a bus. It was back in the “old days” when we had analogue cameras (the reason why this photo survived and was not deleted).
I love this photo. From her point of view it was useless, it was just a blurry photo with the date on. But I loved the tension between the blurred trees and the digital numbers and the fact that this photo had a shifting focus. The orange digits which intentionally only was information had become a part of the picture and not only an information of time. Because of these 2 elements the original idea was pushed in another direction and the viewer had to redefine the perception of the picture.
So this picture became my inspiration for the project;
The shifting of focus in relation to the body.
Feminine and expressive clothing that links the hips, shoulders, back and neck as opposed to the traditional fixed points of waist and breast.
The research I made throughout the project is still the backbone of how I design today.
So, now we are here, ready to open, 17 years after the first Eksempel garment was made. And I am so excited. Combining my ideas about longevity and my designs aesthetics together with sustainable materilas has been a treat for me; I hope it will also be a treat for you.
